West Indies National Cricket Team head coach Phil Simmons after his team’s early World Cup exit said that the bowlers have been performing well consistently, but “the batters haven’t really shown up”.

On Friday, October 21, the Ireland National Cricket Team defeated the West Indies National Cricket Team by 9 wickets in the Round 1 match at the Bellerive Oval, Hobart to storm into the Super-12 round of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022. Also, with the win, they knocked the two-time T20 World Cup champions West Indies National Cricket Team out of the tournament.

At a post-match press conference, West Indies head coach Phil Simmons said that they “were outplayed in all departments” in the match against Ireland.

“I think the assessment is that we just didn’t turn up today,” Simmons said in a post-match press conference.

“We started well with the bat, but we just didn’t continue. I think when you sum it up, we were outplayed in all departments today. They bowled well. We batted well at the start but didn’t carry on, and they just batted well and batted us out of the game.”

“Yeah, that’s how things are. I think we haven’t been playing good enough cricket to be there. We have the batsmen, and the capabilities, we just haven’t been putting it together. Our bowlers are showing up nine out of ten times, but the batters haven’t really shown up,” Simmons said.

I think all the batters will be disappointed in what they’ve produced – Phil Simmons

West Indies National Cricket Team head coach Phil Simmons further said that the batters will be disappointed with their performances in recent times.

“I think all the batters will be disappointed in what they’ve produced, not just at the World Cup but just before the World Cup and everything like that. We need to go back, and batsmen need to take a look at themselves and work out how we score 170, 180 runs to be in the game because the bowlers are doing their job,” he said.

Phil Simmons also said that the West Indies National Cricket Team batters didn’t show intent against Ireland and batting through the middle overs is still a big problem.

“No, we didn’t show the sort of intent that Ireland did, and as I said before, we were outplayed in all departments today. We have shown intent before, but the middle phases have been our problem, and we’re just… we haven’t gotten over it yet,” Simmons conceded.
