Sri Lanka entered the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia with high confidence after winning the Asia Cup in the UAE in September. The Lankans were stunned by Namibia by 55 runs in the opening match of the World Cup on Sunday, October 16.
Dasun Shanaka’s team registered a 79-run win over the United Arab Emirates at the Simonds Stadium in Geelong, which boosted their Net Run Rate and kept their hopes of reaching the Super 12 alive.
Sri Lanka head coach Chris Silverwood said that he is confident of qualifying for the Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup in Australia. Silverwood was delighted with the way Sri Lanka bounced back after the loss against Namibia by defeating the UAE in their second Group A match in Round 1 of the World Cup on Tuesday, October 18.
I’m Always Confident – Chris Silverwood
“I’m always confident. I’m the eternal optimist. We’ll always be looking to win and obviously progress. I’m confident in the boys’ ability. But at the same time we have to make sure we turn up, we put in a performance like we did tonight, because as we’ve seen these teams here are dangerous.
“We’ve got to make sure we give them the respect they deserve and come out fighting,” Silverwood told the press after their win over the UAE.
We Need To Keep An Eye On Dushmantha Chameera – Chris Silverwood
Sri Lanka seemed to have suffered a setback after their leading pacer Dushmantha Chameera appeared to have a calf injury. Silverwood stated that Sri Lanka would monitor his progress after a scan on Wednesday.
“Obviously, we need to keep an eye on him. The medical team will be watching him overnight. Then potentially having a scan tomorrow and we’ll make a plan from there, really. But let’s get all the information in first and find out exactly where we’re at and we’ll have to make a plan,” he added.
Sri Lanka remain third in the Group A points table in Round 1, although their NRR of +0.600 is second best in the group. The Netherlands are on top of the table after winning over Namibia and the UAE, while Namibia are in second place. Sri Lanka will take on the Netherlands on October 20 at the Symonds Stadium in Geelong.
