Marcus Stoinis, an Australian batsman, said on Tuesday that playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) had prepared him to face spinners from Sri Lanka during the hosts’ decisive victory in the Men’s T20 World Cup.

In a Super 12 encounter at Perth Stadium, Stoinis’ brilliant performance (59 not out from 18) propelled Australia to a spirit-boosting seven-wicket victory over Sri Lanka. It was the fastest T20I fifty by an Australian batsman off 17 balls.

The savage way in which Marcus Stoinis destroyed his unfavourable spin matches was one of the highlights of his blitzkrieg during his record-breaking half-century against Sri Lanka. Maheesh Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga were brutally attacked and put through their paces.

Marcus Stoinis, a flashy all-rounder, scored a scorching 50 off just 17 balls. He broke the record for Australia’s quickest half-century by a batter. The previous record belonged to Glenn Maxwell, who beat the West Indies in 2010 by scoring a half-century in just 18 balls.

Against India, Cameron Green recently smashed a 50-run innings in 19 balls. A half-century from David Warner against South Africa in 2009 took 19 balls. Against Sri Lanka in 2011, former all-rounder Shane Watson scored a half-century in 20 balls.

“The IPL has changed my cricket”: Marcus Stoinis

Marcus Stoinis admitted that participating in the IPL helped him neutralize Sri Lanka’s spin danger throughout his innings, hitting several big sixes off the spinners.

“Yeah, definitely the IPL has changed my cricket and helped me evolve, and it’s not only playing on the wickets, but it’s also having the coaches from all over the world, having players from different countries.”

“I’ve played for quite a few years in the IPL and quite a few teams, so you come across a range of techniques and mentalities about how to play spin. Yeah, it has helped me improve for sure,” Stoinis said during the post-match press conference here on Tuesday.

“But yeah, so I’m looking for two balls really, one off the back foot and one off the front foot, just to at least have an option to each. Yeah,” Stoinis added.

Australia defeated Sri Lanka by seven wickets in Perth on Tuesday.
