The Indian team was dealt a huge blow when Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 and now it has been reported that Mohammed Shami or Mohammed Siraj are the options the BCCI is thinking over to replace the Gujarat pacer in the squad for the ICC event.
Jasprit Bumrah had suffered from back pains ahead of the South Africa T20Is and was taken for scans in Trivandrum and subsequently sent to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for a detailed prognosis of the issue.
In a media release, the BCCI revealed that the decision to rule Bumrah out of the T20 World Cup 2022 was taken following a detailed assessment and in consultation with the specialists. Bumrah becomes the second high-profile cricketer from India to miss out on the event after Ravindra Jadeja, who had to undergo knee surgery for an issue.

Mohammed Shami Needs To Prove Fitness For Selection To Replace Jasprit Bumrah In India’s T20 World Cup 2022 Squad
Now, ideally, Mohammed Shami should be the replacement of Bumrah in the Indian squad, but Cricbuzz reported that selectors have doubts over his readiness for the marquee event. Shami has not played T20Is since the last T20 World Cup 2021 but has played ODIs regularly, most recently against England.
He may still be drafted but only after he proves his fitness, it is understood. Mohammed Siraj is the other alternative before the national selectors and the team management. Siraj, by the way, is in the T20I squad for the series against South Africa as a replacement for Bumrah.

Shami was initially ruled out of the South Africa Twenty20 International series due to Covid. He recently put out a video of himself bowling in nets, but as per the report, he will need to undergo a fitness test before being considered for a World Cup berth. Cricbuzz understands that both the national selectors and the team management wanted him to play a match before being included in the World Cup squad.
It will be interesting to see how the situation pans out but there is the likelihood of the spot being a toss-up between Shami and Siraj.
