Jasprit Bumrah, unfortunately, suffered a stress fracture to his back after playing two T20Is against Australia recently. He was named in the Indian squad for the South Africa T20I series as well, but complained of pain in the back and was advised to visit the NCA in Bengaluru.

The medical staff at the NCA conducted an examination on Bumrah and later confirmed that the pacer had sustained a stress fracture to his back despite some hopes of him continuing to play, he was officially ruled out of the T20 World Cup 2022 by BCCI a few days ago.

Mohammed Shami, If Fit, Was Always Going To Be The First Replacement For Jasprit Bumrah- PTI Source

Now a BCCI source has told PTI that Mohammed Shami will be named as the replacement for Jasprit Bumrah in the Indian squad given his experience of playing in Australia. Shami, who is the premier strike bowler in Tests and ODIs for India, last played a T20I in the 2021 T20 World Cup in UAE.

Since then, it was reported that the BCCI selectors wanted to manage his workload and hence told him that he was no longer in T20I plans. But with Bumrah out of the T20 World Cup and need of experience in the pace department with someone with speed and the ability to bowl at the death, Mohammed Shami has been picked to replace him.

He is currently in NCA, proving his fitness, and will fly to Australia to join the Indian squad shortly, who have already landed in Perth for acclimatization.

”Mohammed Shami, if fit, was always going to be the first replacement as that’s the closest Indian team can get in terms of sheer quality. He will be joining sometime next week,” the source told PTI.
