Following Cameron Green’s outstanding T20 performances in India, Australian Test skipper Pat Cummins has spoken on the future of the player.
Green, who filled in for the rested David Warner at the top of the batting order during the three-match series, was among Australia’s finest, which raised questions about his removal from the T20 World Cup selection for the competition that begins on home soil later this month.
The performances also made it more probable that Green would be selected in the top picks in the upcoming IPL player draught, which is something that is believed to alarm Cricket Australia.
Cricket Australia Must Be Proactive In Managing Player Contracts: Pat Cummins
In an effort to protect the young gun from harm, Green is subject to limitations on the amount of work he can do with the ball in hand.
Speaking at a ceremony to introduce the NRMA as Australia’s new naming rights sponsor, Pat Cummins said Cricket Australia must be proactive in managing player contracts to ensure loyalty to the national team continues well into the future. It is believed he stands to earn up to three times his Cricket Australia deal if he is picked up in the IPL.
“I think you have got to be proactive the world is changing almost every month now there’s new leagues and opportunities pop up, we are lucky here in Australia that for all of us players and fans Test cricket is number one, so wherever there is a Test tour on that is where us players want to be, you feel like all the cricket fans are watching,” he said.
“I don’t think we can take for granted that is always going to be the case, I think we do need to be proactive and look after some of the ways we structure contracts or manage different players.”
With 15 Test matches and the World Cup coming up, Pat Cummins acknowledged that controlling Green will be crucial over the upcoming months.
Cameron Green Is Going To Be In Huge Demand: Pat Cummins
This summer, Australia will play in the West Indies and South Africa before travelling to India and England in the domestic off-season.
“Now that he is in and around three formats it becomes even more important (managing him). He’s someone who loves playing, so even when he goes back to WA we’ve got to manage that because we’ve got 15 Test matches in the next six months plus World Cups,” Pat Cummins said.
It would be difficult to blame anyone for choosing the IPL, according to the Australian test captain, who is also dealing with workload issues as he considers taking over as ODI captain once Aaron Finch retires from the format.
“I don’t know, it’s (joining the IPL) one of those ones, you can’t really blame anyone for going in,” Cummins said.
“He’s going to be in huge demand wherever he plays. It’s a decision for him to make. There’s lots of cricket to play.”
