After a disappointing World Cup run, the Australian T20 team is about to undergo some changes, and Ricky Ponting has named Glenn Maxwell as the “natural” candidate to take over as captain.
Despite watching his team’s final match from the sidelines due to a hamstring injury, Aaron Finch has yet to officially announce his retirement from international competition. However, it seems expected that the 35-year-old will also retire from Twenty20 cricket.
Ricky Ponting Picks Glenn Maxwell To Replace Aaron Finch For T20I Captaincy
Ponting said that Maxwell, who has led the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash as well as Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League, should take over.
“He’s obviously done a fair bit in IPL and in BBL. I think that’s probably the logical one,” Ponting said.
“I couldn’t see Pat Cummins wanting to take it on. I was a little bit surprised he took the one-day stuff on to be honest as well just with workload and stuff and how many games he potentially misses, so maybe you look to Maxy (Glenn Maxwell).
“I saw Mitchell Marsh last week had taken his name out. He said he wanted to play and not have to worry about it. I think in the current group, it probably would be Maxy.”
Behind only Marcus Stoinis’ 126 runs, Maxwell scored 118 runs for Australia during the event, a disappointing total for all of the batsmen on the host team.
Glenn Maxwell Hails Aaron Finch
Maxwell, however, praised Finch for his altruistic nature in opting out of last week’s game against Afghanistan despite knowing it might have been his last international contest.
“That’s typical Aaron, he’ll never put his personal interests in front of everyone else’s,” he said.
“He’ll never look for the limelight of like this show’s about me or anything like that. For him to sort of say that he was still feeling it a little bit … must have been a big decision for him, especially in a must-win game where he’s come off a bit of form.
“That must have been a hard decision for him, but credit to him, he didn’t want us hindered in any way. “
