In response to the West Indies team’s catastrophic Twenty20 World Cup campaign, Cricket West Indies (CWI) announced Monday that head coach Phil Simmons will resign from his position following the forthcoming Test series with Australia.

Simmons will retire following the two-Test series between the West Indies and Australia, which begins on November 30 in Perth, according to a statement from CWI.

Following the West Indies’ humiliating first-round elimination from the T20 World Cup, which was finalized by Ireland’s nine-wicket thumping of them in Hobart on Friday, the news was made. Additionally, the group lost to Scotland in a humiliating manner.

This Is Not A Knee-jerk Reaction: Phil Simmons

Simmons said in a statement issued by the CWI that despite the T20 disaster being “disappointing and heart-wrenching,” he had already been thinking about his stance for “some time.”

“This is not a knee-jerk reaction, but a move I have been considering for some time and now is the time to make public that I will step down as West Indies head coach at the end of the Test series against Australia,” said Simmons.

“It is earlier than hoped for, but I will now focus my energies in Australia on continuing to build on the excellent progress the Test team has made,” he added.

In 2016, Simmons coached the West Indies to win at the T20 World Cup in India. In 2019, Simmons served as coach once more.

“He brought valuable experience and stability at a very important period of transformation, including the most challenging environment of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”
