India National Cricket Team head coach Rahul Dravid has said that the absence of Jasprit Bumrah from India’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 squad is a major setback for the side.

On Monday, October 3, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) issued a statement confirming that the pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.

Notably, Bumrah made a comeback to competitive cricket in the second T20I game of the series against Australia after missing the Asia Cup 2022 due to a back injury.

The pace spearhead was expected to feature in the three-match T20I series against South Africa but was ruled out of the series after he complained of back pain during India’s practice session last week and Mohammed Siraj was named as his replacement in the squad for South Africa series.

Speaking after India’s 49-run loss to South Africa in Indore, India National Cricket Team head coach Rahul Dravid said that Bumrah’s absence from the World Cup squad is a big loss, but it is a great opportunity for other pacers to step up and do well for India.

“Bumrah’s absence is a big loss, he’s been a great player but it happens, it’s an opportunity for someone else to stand up. We’ll miss him, his personality around the group,” Dravid said.

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, which is the eighth edition of the multi-nation tournament, is scheduled to be played from October 16 to November 13 in Australia.

At a post-match press conference, head coach Dravid was asked whether Mohammed Shami can replace Bumrah in India’s ICC T20 World Cup squad. Notably, Shami was set to be part of the T20I series against Australia and South Africa, but he contracted Covid-19 and missed out on all 6 games.

“We’ll have a look. We’ve time since October 15, so, Shami is obviously someone who’s in the standbys. Unfortunately for us, he couldn’t play in this series (due to being struck by Covid-19). It would’ve been idea from that perspective, but he’s in the National Cricket Academy at the moment,” Dravid said.

“We’ve to get reports as to how he’s recovering, and what’s his status after 14-15 days of covid, and we’ll take a call. Once I get a report on how he’s feeling, then obviously we (I and the selectors) can really take a call on how to move forward on it,” Dravid added.

India currently have Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh and Harshal Patel as the pace bowling specialists in the 15-member World Cup squad while Shami and Deepak Chahar have been kept in reserves.
