Virat Kohli’s fan base extends throughout the globe and beyond. Indian Express spoke with a Chinese fan of India’s talismanic batter at the Adelaide Oval ahead of the India-Bangladesh Super 12 match.

The fan, who is attending the second Group 2 match in Adelaide on Wednesday, is a language student at Adelaide University who learned Hindi on his own due to his interest in Indian culture.

“Mai Indian team ka bahot bada bhakt hu….I adore Indian culture,” he says on camera. As he gets ready to take his seat at the venue ahead of the toss, he has no qualms about who he believes will win.

Being India’s top scorer at the current World Cup in Australia has generated talk about Kohli. The 33-year-old batsman became just the second batter in T20 World Cup history to reach the 1000-run threshold against South Africa after hitting two fifty-scores in three games.

Virat Kohli becomes the highest run-scorer in men’s T20 World Cups:

Mahela Jayawardene’s record of 1016 runs, which he achieved in 2014, has been surpassed by Virat Kohli, who now holds the record for most runs scored in men’s T20 World Cups.

During India’s fourth group 2 match against Bangladesh in Adelaide, Kohli surpassed the record. He achieved this feat with a strike rate of more than 130 and an average of more than 80 in T20 World Cups. In the seventh over of India’s innings on Wednesday, off the 13th ball he faced, Taskin Ahmed was flicked to midwicket for a single, giving him the run that put him above Jayawardene.

Kohli started the 2022 T20 World Cup with 845 runs and two undefeated half-centuries against Pakistan and the Netherlands before being removed for 12 against South Africa. Those exploits propelled him over Tillakaratne Dilshan (897), Rohit Sharma (904), and Chris Gayle (965) into second place on the list of all-time T20 World Cup run-scorers, until he passed Jayawardene during the game against Bangladesh.

The record for most runs scored in T20 international matches belongs to Kohli, who tops the list ahead of Rohit, Martin Guptill, Babar Azam, and Paul Stirling. In T20Is, Virat Kohli is very close to the 4000-run mark and averages more than 50 with a strike rate of about 140.
