Former India National Cricket Team head coach Ravi Shastri has backed the “three-format player” Suryakumar Yadav to soon make his Test debut for India, saying that the middle-order batter can surprise a few with his batting in the purest format of the game.
The 32-year-old Suryakumar Yadav has so far played 13 ODIs and 36 T20Is for the Men In Blue. He has been a part of India’s Test squad for a few series but has not yet received his Test debut cap.

“I think he is a three-format player. I know they do not talk about him in Test cricket, but he is a three-format player. This guy can play Test cricket and I’ll tell you what, he can surprise a few. Send him there at number 5 and let him stir it up,” Shastri told the official broadcaster after India’s convincing 56-run win over the Netherlands in the ongoing T20 World Cup.

Before My Debut, Ravi Shastri Told Me ‘Ja Ke Bindas Dena’ – Suryakumar Yadav

Suryakumar Yadav, during the same interaction, revealed the advice he received from Shastri before making his debut for the Indian team.
“I still remember he called me up, he was sitting by the poolside, before me making my debut and told me ‘ja ke Bindas dena’ (Go and smash them),” recalled Suryakumar.
In India’s 56-run win over the Netherlands, Suryakumar Yadav and Virat Kohli added unbeaten 95 runs in 48 balls to help India post 179/2 on the board. Kohli smashed terrific 62 runs off 44 balls, including 3 fours and 2 sixes, while Suryakumar smashed exceptional 51 runs off 25 balls, including 7 fours and 1 six.
Suryakumar, who was adjusted as the Player of the Match, after the game said:
“The situation I go in to bat, there are always two scenarios in front of me – either the team has lost two early wickets or there are already good runs (on the board) and two wickets are down. If less runs are there, then I have to increase the tempo and if there are more runs, then I have to maintain that tempo. It’s simple.”
