The Men in Blue finally had their first defeat in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 on Sunday (October 31) against South Africa after winning against Pakistan and Netherlands. On the other hand, Bangladesh had beaten Zimbabwe by 3 runs and Netherlands by 9 runs but lost against South Africa by 104 runs.

Suryakumar Yadav stood tall among ruins with a 68-run inning, while the batting around him capitulated under the searing pace of Proteas — Lungi Ngidi bagged 4 wickets and ran through the Indian top order, while Wayne Parnell picked 3 wickets.

The Men in Blue posted their first win of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 on board thanks to the brilliance of former captain Virat Kohli and all-rounder Hardik Pandya. However, the win was not without its hiccups along the way against arch-rivals Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Sunday (October 23).

Hardik Pandya was impressive with the ball as well against Pakistan, picking up three important wickets and scoring 40 runs with the bat, putting on a record 113 runs for the fifth wicket with Virat Kohli who scored 82*.

Virat Kohli single-handedly powered India to an epic four-wicket win over arch-rivals Pakistan with a magnificent 53-ball 82 not out in their big-ticket ICC T20 World Cup 2022 game. Pakistan recovered from a wobbly start to post a fighting 159 for eight. India completed the chase in the last ball, with Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya (40) doing the bulk of the scoring after a horror start to their innings.

The two revived India with a 113-run stand for the fourth wicket after they were reeling at 31/4 at one stage. Sent in to bat, Pakistan were well served by Iftikhar Ahmed’s 34-ball 51 and Shan Masood’s unbeaten 52 off 42 balls after they lost their first two wickets with just 15 runs on the board in the fourth over. Arshdeep Singh picked both openers in form Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan.

India 160 for 6 (Kohli 82*, Hardik 40) beat Pakistan 159 for 8 (Masood 52*, Iftikhar 51, Arshdeep 3-32, Hardik 3-30) by four wickets

Virat Kolhi, since his break, has just rediscovered his form and is back to what he does best for the team- providing consistency and solidarity. He slammed a century in Asia Cup 2022. Virat Kohli’s knock of 82* off 53 balls saw India win a last-ball thriller against Pakistan.

He hit 6 fours and 4 sixes and batted at a strike rate of 154.72. He top-scored again against the Netherlands. He scored an unbeaten 62 off 44 balls including 3 fours and 2 sixes. However, he failed against South Africa as he was dismissed on 12 and was one of Lungi Ngidi’s 4 victims.

Suryakumar Yadav

Suryakumar Yadav-the man who can’t do any wrong in this T20I format and India’s own Mr. 360, is one of the most improved players since the last World Cup and is going through a purple patch. The right-handed batsman is ranked No. 3 in T20Is only behind Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan and New Zealand’s Devon Conway.

Suryakumar Yadav scored 15 off 10 against Pakistan in India’s first ICC T20 World Cup 2022 match before edging one to the keeper. He was MOM against the Netherlands, scoring an unbeaten 51 off 25 balls including 7 fours and 1 six at a strike rate of 204. Since regaining his full fitness, Hardik Pandya has just been seen winning games single-handedly for India and is contributing in all three facets of the game. He provides the team with the necessary balance of the 6th bowler.

The right-handed batsman scored a vital knock of 40 off 37 balls against Pakistan besides picking 3/30 in 4 overs in India’s first ICC T20 World Cup 2022 game. He didn’t bat against the Netherlands and was wicketless conceding 9 runs in the solitary over he bowled. He scored only 2 against the Proteas and picked 1/29 in 4 overs. He dismissed Aiden Markram for 52.

The man who made a comeback to the team in a more specialized role of a finisher is essential for the team to finish strong in the last few overs. Dinesh Karthik is batting at a good strike rate since his comeback and has given solid finishes and won a few games on his merit this year.

Dinesh Karthik scored only 1 in India’s first ICC T20 World Cup 2022 game against Pakistan. He didn’t bat against the Netherlands. He failed to do well against the Proteas, scoring only 6 off 15 balls. Dinesh Karthik left the field in the match against South Africa owing to a back injury and remains doubtful for the match against Bangladesh.

Dinesh Karthik, who has had a disappointing tournament with the bat, struggled to cope with pace, bounce, and swing on offer at the Optus Stadium track and managed only six off 15 balls in a 52-run stand with Suryakumar Yadav.

Axar Patel

Axar Patel had an extremely poor day against Pakistan in India’s first ICC T20 World Cup 2022 match, scoring only 2 before being run out and conceding 21 runs in a solitary wicketless over.

He made amends in the next match against the Netherlands, picking 2/18 in 4 overs at an economy rate of 4.5- next best to pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar-3 rpo among Indian bowlers. He didn’t play against the Proteas but may return against Bangladesh after his replacement Deepak Hooda scored a three-ball duck.

Ravichandran Ashwin was wicketless (0/23 in 3 overs) in India’s first ICC T20 World Cup 2022 match against Pakistan but picked 2/21 in 4 overs against the Netherlands. He picked 1/43 against the Proteas. The likes of Yuzvendra Chahal may replace him if Indian management opts for a change in the winning combination in India’s next match against Bangladesh.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Bhuvneshwar Kumar is leading the bowling attack in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah. He is lethal with the new bowl as he can swing the bowl both ways, creating problems for the batters at the top. He is India’s top wicket-taker in this format this year. However, his death bowling is a concern.

He has shown good form this year, winning the player of the series award multiple times.  He picked 1/22 against Pakistan in India’s first ICC T20 World Cup 2022 game. He picked 2/9 in 3 overs against Netherlands at an economy of 3 per over and including 2 maiden overs. He failed to pick a wicket but was economical against South Africa (0/21 in 3.4 overs).

Arshdeep Singh

The left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh has executed a spectacular performance in his short T20I career so far.  The Punjab bowler, who made his international debut in the T20I against England this year picked 3/32 in India’s first ICC T20 World Cup 2022 game against Pakistan claiming the wickets of in form Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Asif Ali. He picked 2/37 in 4 overs against the Netherlands. He picked 2/25 in 4 overs against South Africa removing Quinton de Kock and Rilee Rossouw.

Veteran pacer Mohammed Shami replaced injured Jasprit Bumrah in the 15-member Indian cricket squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2022, starting October 16 in Australia. Mohammed Shami last played in T20Is during the last edition of the ICC 2021 T20I World Cup in the UAE before playing against Pakistan in India’s first ICC T20 World Cup 2022 game.

He was supposed to play in the six T20Is at home against Australia and South Africa but tested positive for COVID-19 and had to remain in isolation. On return, he had to prove his fitness before NCA approved his trip to Australia.

Mohammed Shami picked 1/25 in India’s first ICC T20 World Cup 2022 game against Pakistan. He picked 1/27 against the Netherlands in the second game. He was the most economical among Indian bowlers against South Africa, returning with figures of 1/13 in 4 overs.
