England became the second team after the West Indies to win two T20 World Cup titles after beating Pakistan by five wickets at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Sunday, November 13. The Jos Buttler-led team took revenge for their 1992 ODI World Cup final defeat at the same venue.
The Three Lions restricted Pakistan to a below-par total of 137 runs for the loss of eight wickets, with Shan Masood scoring 38 runs off 28 balls. Sam Curran took three wickets, and Chris Jordan and Adil Rashid both took two wickets each. England chased down the target with six balls to spare. Ben Stokes scored an unbeaten knock of 52 runs off 49 balls to lead the team to victory.
Jos Buttler Has The Chance To Build His Own Legacy – Michael Vaughan
Former England captain Michael Vaughan wrote in his Telegraph column that Buttler has a good chance of emulating MS Dhoni’s success in white-ball cricket, noting that the 32-year-old skipper had led England to a brilliant start in his first major tournament.
“Now, Jos Buttler has landed the World Cup at the first time of asking and at the age of 32 he has the chance to build his own legacy. MS Dhoni went on for years as India captain. Buttler can do the same, especially now he is concentrating on one format,” he said.
“There is steel there too. You can see it in Buttler’s eyes. When you have a left-arm seamer, pace, swing and spin, three spinners you have everything covered as a captain. That for me is the benchmark for white ball cricket – you have to have options. From 1-11 they have matchwinners,” the former England captain added.
Buttler became the second wicketkeeper-batsman to win the T20 World Cup as a captain after Dhoni in 2007. The former Indian captain is regarded as one of the most successful modern white-ball captains. Under his captaincy, India won the T20 World Cup in 2007, the 50-over World Cup in 2011, and the Champions Trophy in 2013.
