Karthik Meiyappan of the UAE has made history by becoming the first UAE bowler to take a hat-trick in T20 World Cup history.

In the 15th over of the game, he removed the Sri Lankan trio of Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Charith Asalanka, and Dasun Shanaka. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka is currently down at 123/6 after 16 overs as they lose another wicket in form of Wanindu Hasaranga.

Sri Lanka Under Pressure After Karthik Meiyappan Takes Hat-trick

The Asia Cup champions made a good start to the game, amassing 114 runs in 14 overs for the loss of two wickets.

However, Karthik Meiyappan’s bowling altered the course of the game, putting Sri Lanka on the back foot.

He initially caught Rajapaksa in the deep while attempting to hit one out of the park. Asalanka was caught behind by a googly that took some additional bounce on the next delivery. Later, Meiyappan bowled the precise googly to Shanaka, pushing him forward and going past his inside edge to finish his hat trick.

UAE And Sri Lanka Looking For First Win Of The Tournament

Dasun Shanaka’s Sri Lanka will seek to rebound against the United Arab Emirates in their second encounter in the Qualifiers on Tuesday at Simonds Stadium in Geelong.

After losing the first match against Namibia, Sri Lanka will know that their prospects of making the Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup 2022 are hanging by a thread, as a defeat will see them eliminated from the competition.

UAE, capably commanded by Chundangapoyil Rizwan, will be fully aware of the destiny that awaits his team if they lose since the encounter is a virtual knockout battle for both sides. Sri Lanka will start as favourites, but Namibia’s courageous performance against the past champions gives Rizwan’s men a lot of optimism.

Sri Lanka is presently ranked fourth in Group A, whereas the UAE is ranked third in the group due to a higher net run rate. With minimal dew forecast in the second half of the match, the lengthy boundaries will once again put the spinners into action.
