Former Indian cricketer turned renowned Politician Kirti Azad feels that Indian batting stalwart Virat Kohli should be included in India’s 15-man squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024 later this June. The event, which is set to take place in the USA and West Indies from June 1st onwards, will give the Men in Blue another shot at an ICC silverware. Last year, India had 2 chances to win a major ICC competition but Australia defeated them on both occasions.

First, it was the ICC World Test Championship 2023 final in June 2023 at the iconic Kia Oval stadium in South London where the Aussie claimed victory by 209 runs. Then during the Cricket World Cup held on home soil, India once again faltered against the same opponents in the finale at the Narendra Modi Stadium on November 19th. It was Virat Kohli’s 5th loss in the final of an ICC event which started with the 2014 T20 World Cup loss against Sri Lanka.

What did Kirti Azad say?

There were a lot of rumors going around in the town that Virat Kohli might possibly miss the flight to the USA and West Indies as the Telegraph reported that Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar doesn’t want him on the team. It was also reported that Agarkar himself spoke to Kohli about India requiring a much more aggressive approach and that upcoming youngsters with more of that should be favored.

Soon Agarkar started receiving a lot of backlash with many former cricketers around the world calling it a “joke”. Kirti Azad has become the latest one to react. He feels that Virat Kohli will be selected in the Indian team regardless of his form or anything and said that Agarkar was not able to convince anyone in that regard, not even himself, as a matter of fact.

Azad also revealed that BCCI honorable secretary Jay Shah had spoken with skipper Rohit Sharma about the same but the latter said that Kohli should be there at all costs.

Why should Jay Shah, he is not a selector, to give responsibility to Ajit Agarkar to talk to the other selectors and convince them that Virat Kohli is not getting a place in the T20 team. For this, time was given till 15th March. If sources are to be believed, Ajit Agarkar was neither able to convince himself nor the other selectors.

“Jay Shah asked Rohit Sharma too but Rohit said we need Virat Kohli at any cost. Virat Kohli will play the T20 World Cup and its official announcement will be made before the team selection. Nincompoops should not invovle themselves in selection process,” Kirti Azad said via X.

The Indians will begin their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign against Ireland on June 5 before taking on arch-rivals Pakistan 4 days later on June 9. In their final two league stage games, India will go head-to-head against hosts the United States of America and then against Canada.

Virat Kohli joins RCB camp

Meanwhile, Virat Kohli, who has been out of action since January due to the birth of his second child, arrived at Bengaluru airport last night and joined the Royal Challengers Bangalore camp ahead of IPL 2024. He will be in action straightaway when RCB goes head to head against Chennai Super Kings in the season opener match on March 22nd at the MA Chidambaram stadium.
