ICC World Test Championship 2021-23 Cycle Final To Be Held At The Iconic Lord's Venue – Reports

The final of the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23 cycle, which is the second cycle of the marquee tournament, is likely to be held at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.

The inaugural ICC WTC 2019-21 cycle final was also scheduled to be played at the Lord’s Cricket Ground but due to the Covid-19 pandemic the final was shifted and it was played at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton, where Kane Williamson-led New Zealand defeated Virat Kohli-led India to become the first-ever World Test Champions.

Notably, Southampton was finalized as the venue for the final of the marquee tournament because it was seen as the ideal venue logistically to keep players in a bio-secure bubble because of its on-site hotel.

Now, there are no Covid-19 restrictions in the United Kingdom and the bio-bubbles have also been eased out so the International Cricket Council (ICC) officials are hoping to stage the summit clash of the WTC at the Lord’s Cricket Ground, London in 2023.

ICC chairperson Greg Barclay has said the intention is to schedule the ICC WTC 2021-23 cycle final at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground, London.

“I think it is scheduled for Lord’s, that was always the intention,” ICC chairperson Greg Barclay said on BBC’s Test Match Special at tea on the second day of the first Test between England and New Zealand, at Lord’s.

“It’s June so that rules out a number of other venues and we’ve got to get certainty around where it’s hosted. We’re out of Covid now so subject to arrangements being made and being able to be hosted out of Lord’s I think that’s the intention,” he added.

Meanwhile, England will be playing a one-off Test against a yet-to-be finalized team in England next summer before hosting the Ashes and that will likely increase the possibility of the WTC final being held at the Lord’s, as per a report in ESPNcricinfo.

However, there is some work which needs to be done before finalizing the venue and the International Cricket Council officials are likely to announce the venue at their Annual General Meeting next month.
