Virat Kohli-led India National Cricket Team have won the first Test of the three-match Test series of the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23 cycle against Dean Elgar-led South Africa National Cricket Team by 113 runs at the SuperSport Park, Centurion on Thursday, December 30.

On Day 1, the Indian team dominated against South Africa as the openers added a century partnership. KL Rahul smashed a sensational century, Mayank Agarwal scored a brilliant half-century, Virat Kohli scored good 35 runs before losing his wicket away after playing a terrible shot and senior batter Ajinkya Rahane also looked comfortable out in middle. Then the former Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane and current vice-captain Rahul added 73* runs for the 4th wicket and at the end of the day, India were at 272/3.

Day 2 of the first Test was called off due to continuous rain at the venue and it was told that 98 overs will be played on Day 3 of the Test match.

On Day 3, India faced a major batting collapse and lost back-to-back wickets and were bowled out for 327 runs. Meanwhile, South Africa in their first innings also lost some quick wickets. Skipper Dean Elgar was dismissed by premier pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah in the first over and he managed to score only 1-run.

Then, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur shined, especially Shami as he bagged a 5-wicket haul, he picked all the big wickets as he dismissed Keegan Petersen, Aiden Markram, Wiaan Mulder, Temba Bavuma and Kagiso Rabada to complete 200 Test wickets.

Temba Bavuma top-scored for the side with 52 runs in his bag and South Africa were bowled out for 197. Also, India in their second innings lost the early wicket of Mayank Agarwal and at the end of the day, India were at India – 16/1 in 6.0 overs.

On Day 4 India once again faced a collapse and the top run-getter for the side was wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant who scored just 34 runs and India were bowled out for 174 runs.

South Africa were given a big target of 305 runs to chase and opener Aiden Markram was castled by Mohammed Shami in the 2nd over itself. Keegan Petersen, Rassie van der Dussen and nightwatchman Keshav Maharaj were dismissed too on Day 4, however, skipper Dean Elgar scored a good half-century and at Stumps South Africa were at 94/4.

On Day 5, skipper Elgar was dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah in the 51st over of the innings. Soon wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock and all-rounder Wiaan Mulder were dismissed by Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami. Meanwhile, after the Lunch break, South Africa lost back-to-back wickets and eventually lost the match by 113 runs.

India after the dominating win over South Africa have won the 4th Test in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle and have 64.28 percentage points. On the other hand team, South Africa after losing their first match of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 are placed second from the bottom.
