Australia thrashed West Indies by 164 runs in the first Test of the series going on at Perth to take 1-0 lead. Kraigg Brathwaite batted admirably through the final two sessions of day four to provide hope for the injury-hit tourists, who needed a record 498 runs for victory or, more realistically, to bat through 154 overs to draw.

Australia began the last day of the contest well ahead of West Indies. With skipper Brathwaite firmly set, the tourists began the proceedings on 192 for 3, needing 306 runs more to chase down an improbable total of 498.

Nathan Lyon Strikes Early On Day 5 Dent West Indies

Veteran spinner Nathan Lyon striked early in the morning as he removed Kyle Mayers, getting him caught at slip. Later on, he went through the stumps of Brathwaite as the batter was caught between playing forward or back. Australian bowlers made life difficult for the Windies batters as they bowled within great areas to trouble the visiting batters. Lyon finished his spell with figure of 6-128 in 42.5 overs.

Earlier on day four of the contest, Australia had declared their second innings around lunchtime, after Labuschagne had added a century to his first innings double century. Labuschagne became the third Australian hitter, behind Greg Chappell and Doug Walters, to register a double century and a century in the same Test.

Chasing 498, West Indies were off to a brilliant start thanks to their openers Kraig Brathwaite and Tagenarine Chanderpaul, who stitched together a partnership of 116.

Brathwaite led from the front and was in spectacular form, scoring unexpectedly soon to make Australia’s shorthanded attack work. He hit a well-deserved century right before stumps.

However, Starc and Lyon did not let the visitors capitalize on the good start and picked up 3 wickets before the end of the day to put Australia in driver’s seat. Earlier in the match, Australia scored 598 runs in their first innings thanks to double centuries from Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith. In reply, West Indies could post only 283.

Following the game, neither of the two teams changed their position in the ICC WTC Points Table. While Australia remained at the top spot, West Indies remained at sixth. The defeat, however, has made West Indies’ task of qualifying for the WTC final tough.

Australia are currently at the top with a points percentage of 70 followed by South Africa who have a points percentage of 60. On the other hand, India’s points percentage is 52.08.
