5. Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the first Indian player who can retire from T20Is after IND vs AFG T20I series. The right-arm pacer last played for India in ICC T20 World Cup 2022. However, after India’s defeat in the semi-finals against England, many veteran players faced the wrath of selectors and Bhuvneshwar Kumar was one of them.

Kumar will turn 34 this year and young pacers like Umran Malik, Shardul Thakur, and Arshdeep Singh have impressed with their performances in the shortest format. Hence, Kumar will find it difficult to return to the T20I team and he might retire from T20I after IND vs AFG T20I series.

Dinesh Karthik is another player on this list. Karthik made a comeback to the T20I team last year and successful performance in IPL 2022, where he shattered many crucial knocks for his team Royal Challengers Bangalore.

However, he was snubbed from the national team after a poor batting show in ICC T20 World Cup 2022. Karthik has also performed poorly in IPL 2023 so far and hence will not get a chance in IND vs AFG T20I series. As a result, he might look to pull down the curtains on his T20I career.

Shikhar Dhawan might be another Indian player who can retire from T20Is after IND vs AFG T20I series. Dhawan last played a T20I match in the series against Sri Lanka in 2021. Later, he was only picked in ODIs.

However, with the arrival of Shubman Gill as a promising opener, Dhawan lost his place in ODIs as well. If he is not picked in the T20I series against Afghanistan, he might never make a comeback to the shortest format.

However, selectors are focussing on young talents in the shortest format and Ashwin will find it difficult to make a comeback to T20Is. As a result, the 36-year-old spinner might leave the T20I format and only focus on Tests.
