Ravichandran Ashwin and Washington Sundar might have to fight it out for the number 8 slot in the batting order in the first ODI against Australia. One among the two might have a place in the XI in Mohali.

India takes on Australia for a three-match ODI series starting with the first ODI in Mohali on September 22. KL Rahul will lead the side in the absence of Rohit Sharma. The likes of Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, and Kuldeep Yadav have been rested from the first two games and will be back for the third.

Meanwhile, former Indian spinner Piyush Chawla in an interaction with ESPN Cricinfo revealed his choice between the two spinning all-rounders for the first ODI. Chawla said that Ashwin had better prowess with the ball in hand and should be given the go-ahead for the first ODI match.

“We have batting till No. 8 in the Indian team. If 8 batters cannot get the job done, you cannot expect No. 9 to come and do the job for you. So, I’ll look at from the bowling perspective. Ashwin has hardly played 2 ODIs in the last year and it is going to be really important to see how they (Ashwin and Washington) come and bowl in this series. If he (Ashwin) bowls really well, they will go with him in the World Cup,” Chawla said on ESPNcricinfo.

he further said that all the Indian bowlers should be rotated in the series and should play two games each. India have Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohd Siraj, Sharduk Thakur, and Prasidh Krishna as five pacers in the squad announced for the Australia series.

“I feel all of the Indian pacers will play two-two games each. They will be given enough game time but will be given rest as well,” Chawla said.

India will play their first ODI game against Australia in Mohali on Friday, 22 September. The other two ODIs will be played in Indore and Rajkot.
