Sreesanth Reveals How Sanju Samson Got His First Break With Rajasthan Royals In IPL

Sanju Samson who is regarded as one of the exceptional talents in the Indian cricket team is currently not finding a place in the XI. He was kept as a travelling reserve for the Asia Cup 2023 squad. However, he did not get to play any games.

Subsequently, he was snubbed from the Indian World Cup squad which was announced and he was not included in the Asian Games squad as well. samson was also not included in the ODI squad for the Australia series.

Former cricketer experts have expressed their surprise at Samson’s omission from the ODI squad. He averages 55 in 13 ODI games where he has scored 380 runs In 24 T20Is, the batter has scored 374 runs at an average of 19.68.

Sreesanth Shares Sanju Samson’s Story With Rajasthan Royals

In a recent conversation with Sportskeeda, Sreesanth spoke about how he lied to then-Rajasthan Royals skipper Rahul Dravid to get Samson drafted into the team.

“Rahul bhai listened to me when I introduced Sanju to him. I lied to him, I said, ‘This kid hit me for six sixes in a local tournament’. Rahul bhai said, ‘Shree, kuch bhi bol, ye kyu bol raha hai?’ (Say anything, why are you lying like this) (Laughs)”, Sreesanth told Sportskeeda.

“…But when Rahul bhai saw him bat he was convinced, came to me and said, ‘Sree, don’t let this Sanju guy go to any other selection, we are signing him. Whether or not he’d get matches, I don’t know but we would like to sign him.” he further added.

In 11 matches in IPL 2023, Sanju scored 216 runs with just one fifty to his name in his debut season with the Rajasthan Royals. Gradually he went onto become their best batter and eventually led the side. Under Samson’s leadership, Rajasthan Royals made it to the final of IPL 2022 after 14 seasons. They lost to the Gujarat Titans, unfortunately.

So far Samson has scored 3211 runs in 124 matches in the IPL for Rajasthan Royals at an average of 29.73 with 17 fifties and two hundreds.
