Mohammed Shami ended with figures of 5/51 as Australia were bowled out for 276 in the first ODI in Mohali after being put into bat first. India now need 277 to win and take a lead in the series.
Shami who replaced Mohammed Siraj in the playing XI picked up a wicket in his very first over to give India a good start in the game. He cleaned up Mitchell Marsh on the fourth delivery of the first over to give Australia an early setback.
He dismissed Steve Smith during the middle phase breaking an important stand of 94 runs between him and David Warner (52). The pacer finally came back in the end overs to dismiss Marcus Stoinis (29), Matthew Short (2), and Sean Abbott (20) to break the rhythm of the Australian innings.

Three of Shami’s five wickets were bowled which means that he was always within the stumps. That he completed his spell also meant that there were no injury concerns with one of the lead Indian pacers.
During the mid-innings break, Shami while talking to Harsha Bhogle for Sports18 took a dig at the commentator after he asked whether or not he was feeling the heat. Replying to Harsha’s question Shami said “Haan Shayad Aap Log Toh AC Mein The, Hum Log Bahar The, Garmi Toh Hai” taking a dig at the veteran commentator.

Further during his interaction, he spoke about his bowling and admitted the fact that he was not getting much help from the wicket.
” Very happy, enjoy the company of Siraj a lot. It’s important to bowl in the right areas and set the tone. Yes, it was hot out here. There wasn’t much out of the wicket so the only option was to bowl good lengths and mix-up your variations. Feels good when you put in the effort and get wickets, it’s good for the team and for your confidence,” said Shami after his spell.
India without the likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are chasing 277 to win the first ODI and take an important lead in the series.
