Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra commented on Rohit Sharma’s batting struggles in the ongoing series against England. Aakash Chopra criticized Rohit Sharma’s shot selection in the first two Tests, suggesting the need for improvement in his approach to batting.

Rohit Sharma is currently leading the national team in the five-match series at home. The home team suffered a disappointing 28-run loss during the series opener in Hyderabad. They bounced back to secure victory in the second match, leveling the series at 1-1.

The Indian skipper has been going through a lean patch in the longer format of the game. The right-handed batter scored 90 runs across four innings at a disappointing average of 22.50. He has failed to cross the fifty-run mark in his last eight innings in red-ball cricket.

It’s Not Rohit Sharma’s First Series As A Captain – Aakash Chopra

In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra acknowledged Rohit Sharma‘s experience as a captain but highlighted that his shot selection is questionable. Chopra emphasized the importance of avoiding careless shots, citing Rohit’s dismissals.

“I won’t say he is not concentrating on his batting because it’s not his first series as a captain. He has captained earlier as well and has done well also as a captain,” Chopra said.

“However, let’s be honest the way he has gotten out, some shots were avoidable, like in the first match, the shot he played against Jack Leach after jumping down the track was ordinary. After that, in the first innings in Vizag, the shot he played against Shoaib Bashir was slightly lazy,” he added.

Rohit Sharma Has To Come In Form – Aakash Chopra

The cricketer-turned-commentator emphasized the importance of Rohit Sharma’s form for India‘s success in the series against England. Chopra noted that Rohit could expose the weaknesses in England’s spin bowling if he bats for an entire day.

“However, the truth is that it’s absolutely necessary for Rohit Sharma to come in form if India have to win this series. It is not optional, he has to come in form,” Chopra further stated.

“The opposition bowling is looking slightly weak to you but they are punching above their weight. However, if Rohit Sharma bats one full day, he will make it evident how ordinary the England bowling standard, especially the spin bowling, is. He is that good.”

Rohit Sharma is India’s most experienced batter in the ongoing series against England. The batter has scored 3827 runs at an average of 44.50 across 56 Test matches. Notably, he has amassed 2092 runs in 26 matches at an impressive average of 61.52 on home soil.

On Saturday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad for the last three Tests. Senior batter Virat Kohli will miss the remainder of the series due to personal reasons, while KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja’s participation is subject to fitness.

The third Test match of the ongoing series will take place at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot, starting on Thursday, February 15.
