Former England captain Alastair Cook who was in charge of the last foreign side registering a Test series win in India back in 2012, hailed India’s current vice captain Jasprit Bumrah for entirely changing the complexion of the game with his sensational 16-over spell during the 2nd innings on Day 2 at the ACA-VDCA stadium.
Jasprit Bumrah complimented the efforts of spinners – Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav who registered the opening wickets of openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley. The English duo had once again got England off to a flyer and would set a perfect tone for the following batters to take over on day 2.
Duckett became the first to depart for a 21 off 17 after England had scored 59 within the 10th over with Kuldeep Yadav naming his wicket. Then Zak Crawley who was in a trailblazing mood of displaying Bazball to the crowd at Vishakhapatnam, got out against the run of play after a quickfire 76 off 78 which included 11 fours and 2 sixes.
Crawley got out while trying to dispatch one over the leg side boundary before landing only a leading edge in the air off Axar Patel’s stock delivery, towards the backward point area with underfire batter Shreyas Iyer completing a brilliant diving catch.
That was when Indian skipper Rohit Sharma brought Jasprit Bumrah into the attack and that was perhaps the changing point of the game, according to Sir Alastair Cook.
Bumrah first led to the departure of Joe Root with a first slip routine catch to Shubman Gill before angling in a deadly yorker towards the stumps of 1st Test hero Ollie Pope. The 30-year-old continued his wicket-taking spree, removing Johnny Bairstow, Ben Stokes, Tom Hartley, and James Anderson.
Jasprit Bumrah converted his 5-wicket haul into a 6-wicket haul and also became the quickest Indian bowler to complete 150 Test wickets by innings. Rohit Sharma’s accurate bowling change and Bumrah’s game-changing spell helped India step out in the middle once again on day 2 as England crashed out for 253, scoring 7 runs more than what they posted in the 1st innings at Hyderabad.
“He Took The Pitch Out Of It And Ripped The Heart Out Of England’s Batting”, Cook Appreciates Jasprit Bumrah
Alastair Cook appreciated Jasprit Bumrah’s quality of taking the pitch conditions out of the conversation and trusting his strengths to dismantle England’s batting order.
“Bumrah has carried India through today and has single-handedly changed the course of this game. England’s batting card started so well with Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley, who played beautifully for 76. His wicket, the first he came down the wicket and tried to hit leg-side getting a leading edge – that was the changing point.” – Alastair Cook said to TNT sports.
Bumrah jumped in and ripped the heart out of the England batting line-up. Root was first to go, Pope to an unplayable in-swinging yorker, Bairstow and Stokes too falling to Bumrah. He has changed the game. He took the pitch out of it, it was down to him and him only. 253 all out is well below par.” – Cook concluded.
