Ravichandran Ashwin has reacted to Sunil Gavaskar’s recent suggestions that the spinner should be made the captain for his 100th Test. Many were expecting Ravichandran Ashwin to replace Virat Kohli as India’s Test captain when the latter stepped down in 2022.
However, the BCCI decided otherwise and named Rohit Sharma as the Test captain of the team. And while Rohit has done a good job as a Test captain so far, many still believe that Ravichandran Ashwin and not him should have been made the captain.
One of them is none other than Sunil Gavaskar. Time and again, the former India captain has stated that while he has nothing against Rohit, he would have liked to see the spinner replacing Virat Kohli as the Test captain. Ravichandran Ashwin has been one of India’s most important Test players in the last decade or so.
A modern-day great, he has picked up a stunning 507 wickets in just 99 Tests so far with the help of 35 five-wicket hauls. Tamil Nadu has made an impact with the bat as well and has scored over 3000 runs with the help of five centuries.
Ravichandran Ashwin reacts to Sunil Gavaskar:
Ravichandran Ashwin is all set to play his 100th Test when Team India takes on England in the fifth and final Test of the ongoing series. He will become only the 14th cricketer from India to achieve this incredible milestone. Among active Indian cricketers, only Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Ishant Sharma have played 100 Tests.
Ahead of the spinner’s 100th Test, Sunil Gavaskar said that he would like to see Rohit allowing Ravichandran Ashwin to take charge of the team for his special game. He stated that it would be a precious gesture for a bowler who has done so much for Indian cricket.
“India win tomorrow (Monday) and you all go to Dharamsala. I just hope Rohit Sharma allows you to lead the team onto the field when you take the field, that will be a gesture, wonderful honor for all that you have done for Indian cricket,” Gavaskar said after stumps on Day 3 of the ongoing fourth Test in Ranchi.
In reply, Ravichandran Ashwin said: “Sunny bhai, you’re being too generous. Thank you so much. I have no expectations out of all these things. I think I’m well past all that but genuinely saying I’m enjoying every single moment that I am being with this team and the longer it lasts, I will be very happy.”
