Former India cricketer Robin Uthappa recently responded to the exclusion of Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan from the BCCI Central Contracts list. Robin Uthappa called for clarity from either Shreyas Iyer or Ishan Kishan to clear up speculations surrounding this matter.
The absence of Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan from the BCCI central contracts for the 2023-24 season sparked widespread discussion within the cricket community. Many former players commended the cricket board’s decision to take a firm stance against the duo.
Iyer and Kishan came under scrutiny after opting out of the Ranji Trophy matches, despite the BCCI’s warning to centrally contracted players to prioritize domestic cricket. The Indian Cricket Board decided to remove the two players from the contract list.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, Robin Uthappa emphasized the need to end the ongoing speculations surrounding Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan. Uthappa expressed the importance of hearing the truth directly from the individuals involved to clarify the situation.
“I think, we as individuals and as perhaps today, I see myself on your side of the table as well. As a broadcaster, I also want to know the answers. I also like to know what the truth is. Having said that, we won’t know what the truth is, unless it’s spoken by the stakeholders of this piece, and that is the players themselves and the ones involved with the players themselves, and that’s the captain, the coaches, support staff,” Uthappa was quoted by Hindustan Times.
Ishan Kishan played for the Indian team in a T20 match against Australia in November 2023 at home. The left-handed batter opted out of the Test series against South Africa, citing mental fatigue. He was not included in India’s squad for the Test series against England.
Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer was dropped from the squad after two matches in the five-match series against England. The right-handed batter didn’t play for Mumbai in the Ranji quarterfinal against Baroda. Later, he represented the Mumbai state team in the semifinal clash.
We’ll Only Keep Speculating – Robin Uthappa
Robin Uthappa emphasized the importance of hearing directly from the players or selectors to put an end to the speculation. Uthappa highlighted the need for transparency to understand what truly occurred.
“And I think we’ll only keep speculating about all of it until we hear from these players in particular or from the selectors in particular. And I think we can all speculate as much as we want. But for me, I would like to reserve till I actually know for sure what’s happened and what transpired,” Uthappa added.
Ishan Kishan recently started his preparation for the upcoming India Premier League (IPL) 2024 with Hardik Pandya. The young wicketkeeper batter will represent the five-time champion Mumbai Indians (MI) in the 17th edition of the cash-rich league.
