Former India head coach Ravi Shastri made a bizarre mistake while commentating on day one of the ongoing third Test between India and England in Rajkot. The former cricketer-turned-commentator called debutant Sarfaraz Khan’s wife his mother.

Sarfaraz Khan was handed his debut Test cap on Thursday (February 15) for the crucial game of the five-match series. His father, Naushad Khan, and his wife, Romana Jahur, were also invited to the field for the cap presentation ceremony. After the ceremony, both of them sat in the stands and waited patiently for the Mumbai batsman to shine on his debut.

Sarfaraz Khan walked out to bat in the third session of the day. As he arrived at the crease, the cameras turned toward his wife and his father who were in the stands. Ravi Shastri was on commentary duties at that time and he made a big blunder, calling Sarfaraz’s wife his mother.

“His father, and mother, watching the young man bat,” said Ravi Shastri.

Sarfaraz Khan shines on debut:

Sarfaraz Khan hit the ground running in international cricket. The right-handed batsman showed absolutely no nerves as he took the England attack to the cleaners and scored a whirlwind fifty. He equaled the Indian record for fastest fifty on Test debut as he reached the milestone in just 48 balls.

He was looking destined to score a century on his debut before his promising knock was cut short in an unfortunate manner. A miscommunication with Ravindra Jadeja saw Sarfaraz getting run out for 62. His knock came off 66 balls and was studded with 9 fours and a six.

Talking about the third Test, India ended day one on 326 for 5. Batting first, the hosts were off to a disastrous start and were reeling at 33 for 3 before centuries from captain Rohit Sharma and Jadeja rescued them. Rohit and Jadeja 204 runs for the fourth wicket before the former was dismissed by Mark Wood. Rohit departed after scoring 131 runs. Jadeja, on the other hand, remained unbeaten on 110.
