Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif in his analysis of the first day’s play of the Vizag Test lauded Yashasvi Jaiswal for staying unbeaten for 179. India scored 336/6 in 92 overs. At one point, it looked like India would post over 450 on the opening day.

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma won an important toss and opted to bat first. He was the first wicket to fall for India for 14. Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, debutant Rajat Patidar, Axar Patel, and KS Bharat got into double digits but were unable to convert their starts.

For England Rehan Ahmed and Shoaib Bashir the debutant too two wickets each. James Anderson and Tom Hartley took a wicket each. India lost three wickets in the final session to hand over the advantage to England at the stumps. Former England skipper Kevin Pietersen said that the opening day of the second Test belonged to England.

Kaif spoke about the day’s play on his official Twitter handle. He started by speaking about how the Indian batters looked set but lost their wickets and failed to capitalize on a good start.

Mohammad Kaif Sums Up India’s Day At Vizag

“Before I speak about Yashasvi Jaiswal, I will speak about Rohit Sharma and his Indian team. Rohit won the toss and opted to bat. Rohit and all the other Indian batters looked set but could not score big knocks for the team. Every batter scored 20 to 30 runs but could not kick on and get a big century that was needed,” Kaif started his analysis by saying.

He then spoke about Jaiswal’s knock. During his speech, he also said that Jaiswal reminded him of Virender Sehwag.

“Now I will speak about Yashasvi Jaiswal. He has been a good player in the white-ball format. He has shown that same form in red-ball cricket. He is still very new to Test cricket but has adapted to the format beautifully. Speaking about his footwork, he used his feet well against the spinners especially white hitting those five sixes. His batting reminded me of Virender Sehwag my old friend,” said Kaif.

He further spoke about how Jaiswal went through the hard yards of training at the Rajasthan Royals camp in Nagpur playing on back and red soil and improving his overall game.

Jaiswal himself spoke about his innings after the end of the day’s play. He spoke about how he went about pacing his innings and shifted his gears in the process.

“I wanted to play it session by session. When they were bowling well, I just wanted to get through that spell. Initially, the wicket was damp and there was spin and bounce, with a bit of seam. However, I wanted to convert the loose balls, and play till the end. I would love to double this up, and play till the end for the team. I want to recover well for tomorrow now” said Jaiswal.

India headed into this game by making a few changes to their playing XI. With KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja ruled out, India handed a debut cap to Rajat Patidar and replaced Jadeja with Kuldeep Yadav. Mohammed Siraj was rested for this match as he was replaced by Mukesh Kumar.
