Shreyas Iyer, on Monday (February 5), came up with a stunning piece of fielding effort to run out Ben Stokes in the second innings of the second Test between India and England in Vishakhapatnam.

Just when it looked like England could turn things around in the game after a middle-order collapse, Shreyas Iyer sent back the England skipper to put India firmly in the driver’s seat. Chasing an improbable 399, England were in a commanding position in the first session of day four. They were on 132 for 2 with a well-set Zak Crawley and in-form Ollie Pope at the crease.

However, Ravichandran Ashwin turned the game on its head by dismissing Ollie Pope and Joe Root in quick succession. It was followed by a 40-run stand between Zak Crawley and Jonny Bairstow before India removed both of them in quick succession to reduce England to 194 for 6 at lunch.

Shreyas Iyer has the last laugh:

After lunch, Ben Stokes and Ben Foakes started cautiously. They were looking well set and India were in a spot of bother before Shreyas Iyer’s stunning direct hit put India in the driver’s seat once again. Ben Stokes’ dismissal ended the 26-run stand and saw England getting reduced to 220 for 6.

And Shreyas Iyer also used the opportunity to taunt Stokes by replicating his celebration from earlier in the game. Stokes had taken a brilliant running catch to dismiss Shreyas Iyer in the second innings and celebrated by raising his finger towards the crowd. The India batsman also did the same as the England skipper was walking towards the dressing room.

Meanwhile, India went on to win the game by 106 runs to draw level in the five-match series. After Stokes’ dismissal, Foakes and Tom Hartley kept their team’s slim chances alive by adding 55 runs for the eighth wicket. Bumrah broke the stand by dismissing Foakes. England’s tail-enders could not delay the inevitable for long and the visitors were eventually all out for 292.
