Indian cricketer Tilak Varma opened up about the hard work his father went through so that he doesn’t face any obstacles in his cricketing journey. He said that his dad used to work from morning to evening and he bought him everything he needed to play.

From being the son of an electrician to carrying the Indian batting lineup, Tilak Varma’s story is something for everyone to cherish. The Southpaw after his rollicking performances in the domestic circuit and last two IPL seasons received his maiden call-up for the Indian side.

The journey continued to be beautiful for Tilak Varma as he got his debut cap for India for the first T20I against West Indies. The left-hander started his international career with two massive sixes and smashed a staggering 39-run knock in his debut outing for the team. He was the highest run-getter for the team.

Tilak Varma continued his impressive run as he smashed a sensational half-century in the second T20I, in a situation where every other batter struggled to get going. His knock of 51 runs in the second game powered India to a total of 152 runs, which seemed impossible at one stage.

While recalling his father’s struggle Tialk Varma said that his family support was very good and revealed that whenever he asked him for a bat, his dad used to give him.

Speaking to Star Sports, he said: “My family support was very good. My father was an electrician, so he used to work a lot. He used to work from the morning to the evening just to send me to the cricket academy. He worked a lot for me. Sometimes, I didn’t have a bat so I used to ask my father and he always said he will provide it for me.”

IND vs WI: When he slept, he used to keep the bat and ball by his side – Tilak Varma’s father Namboori Nagaraju

Tilak Varma’s father Namboori Nagaraju also talked about his son’s journey, saying that he used to have bat all the time in his hand and even used to sleep with it. He also credited his coach Salam for his success.

He explained: “From the time he was a child, he always had a bat in his hand, all the time he used to play with his cricket bat. We bought him that plastic bat which you get from toy stores, and even when he slept, he used to keep the bat and ball by his side. Salam sir used to encourage him a lot, whether it was his lunch or his cricket equipment, he said that he would give it to him.

“He used to tell me that if there was any issue, he is always there, we have to get him (Tilak) to the next level. I used to tell Salam Sir that he should not fall short in his studies, he used to assure us that everything would be fine and money would not be an issue. He used to encourage him a lot, he was like a godfather to him,” he added.

Tilak Varma will be next seen in action when India takes on West Indies in the third T20I on Tuesday (8th August) at Guyana.
