In the second One-Day International on December 7, Wasim Jaffer cautioned Team India to avoid losing wickets to Bangladesh’s standout all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan. He wants one of India’s top five hitters to make a huge contribution so that India can reach 230, a respectable total on that surface.
For those who are unaware, Shakib took a wicket in the first ODI as the Indian batters struggled badly. The only bright spot was KL Rahul, who scored 73 off 70 balls as they were dismissed for 186 in 41.2 overs. The three-match ODI series is now 0-1 in favor of the opposition after the Men in Blue were defeated by one wicket.
Shakib Al Hasan Doesn’t Get That Recognition: Wasim Jaffer
According to Jaffer’s ESPNCricinfo interview:
“They should bat, keeping in mind a score of 220-230, not 280 or 300, which can be out of reach target on that pitch. Avoid soft dismissals against spinners. If you get a start, try to play 70-80. If one of the top five scores a century, nothing like it. We didn’t see that even in New Zealand.”
Shakib Al Hasan’s contribution to Bangladesh and international cricket was lauded by Jaffer. The all-rounder, according to the former Indian cricketer, is among the best players in the world but goes unnoticed because he represents lower-ranked Bangladesh.
On this, he said:
“Shakib Al Hasan is one of the world’s best all-rounders. Unfortunately, he plays for Bangladesh. If he had played for some big countries, he would’ve made a much bigger name and appreciation. He doesn’t get that recognition, but he’s a top performer.”
It’s important to note that Shakib has amassed more than 600 wickets and over 13,000 runs in various formats of international cricket. With another strong showing in the forthcoming game, he will try to help Bangladesh win the series and duplicate their historic series victory against India from earlier in 2015.
In the meantime, Rohit Sharma and company will try to play their best game in a game they must win. The hitting unit will need to perform well after their abject failure in the first game.
