Shubman Gill scored his maiden Test century for India on the third day of the first test against Bangladesh on Friday, December 16, at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chattogram. Gill replaced Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, who was ruled out of the first test due to injury and made the most of the opportunity to cement his place in the squad.

The 23-year-old opened the innings with stand-in captain KL Rahul and put on a 70-run opening partnership, followed by a 113-run partnership with Cheteshwar Pujara. Gill surpassed his previous best of 91 against Australia in Brisbane in 2021 and scored 110 off 152 balls, including 10 fours and three sixes.

Century In Test Cricket Is Very Big Moment – Ajay Jadeja

Former India batsman Shubman Gill praised Shubman Gill’s performance. During a discussion on Sony Sports, Jadeja compared his maiden Test century to passing an exam. Jadeja feels that Cheteshwar Pujara will have different emotions than Gill after reaching the same milestone.

“A century in Test cricket is a very big moment. I don’t even know how it feels. It is just a number, but a very important one. I can only talk about myself and not about others. It is like passing an exam, this number has an effect like that,” said Jadeja on Sony Sports.

“You can talk about the pressure or the wait for that, Shubman Gill needs to savor that moment. If you see Cheteshwar Pujara, who had scored 18 centuries, when he scored one after three years, it is a different celebration.”

Shubman Gill Has The Ability – Ajay Jadeja

Jadeja praised Gill for his consistent improvement in his game since his arrival on the international stage, saying he is not one of those who have gone back after scoring a Test century. Jadeja emphasized the different paths of Gill and Prithvi Shaw in international cricket.

“I hope his wagon will only move ahead from here because this guy has shown that he is not one of those who have gone back after scoring one. Prithvi Shaw is also his age group, he scored a century in his first Test but he is not even around at the moment. So just like that wagon has gone back, this wagon is steadily moving ahead,” said Jadeja.

“Shubman Gill has the ability and the best thing I find about him is that we have only seen him moving forward since we have seen him. A player comes in whom you see a lot of talent, but if you see two or four years later, he is still stuck there. He has added something whenever we have seen him.”

Both Gill and Shaw were well known for India’s under-19 World Cup triumph in 2018. The latter, who captained the team, scored a century on his Test debut against the West Indies, but later dropped down the pecking order due to his fitness and performance issues.
