Wasim Jaffer believes wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan has overtaken Shubman Gill in the pecking order to become Team India’s backup opener heading into the 2023 50-over World Cup.
He said this after Kishan hit 210 off 131 against Bangladesh in the third ODI on Saturday (December 10).

In the process, the left-hander achieved the 50-over format’s fastest double-centurion, completing the feat in just 126 balls. He surpassed Chris Gayle, who set the record in 138 balls.
Wasim Jaffer said on ESPNCricinfo: “Ishan Kishan has pushed ahead of Shubman Gill. I feel sorry for Shubman since he was the frontrunner. Prior to this inning, he would have been considered the third opener in the lineup, behind Rohit and Shikhar Dhawan. He will now be ranked number four.”

Wasim Jaffer continued by saying that during his selfless knock, which featured 24 boundaries and ten sixes, Kishan put the needs of his team before his own accomplishments.
“His intent, first of all, getting his fifty and then playing very selflessly. He kept attacking, putting pressure on the bowlers and looking for that above-par score. He was putting his team ahead of his milestones.”
“ODI is where he is at his best”: Wasim Jaffer
Wasim Jaffer also gave praise to Virat Kohli, who scored his first century in the ODI format in more than three years with his 44th ODI century.
He gave the veteran credit for using his lifeline after Litton Das missed a babysitter. According to Wasim Jaffer, Kohli’s performance should help India.
“I think it brings a lot of pressure off him. The first couple of games, he got out. He was lucky today with Litton Das, who dropped an absolute sitter. ODI is where he is at his best. Once he gets into a hundred-making habit, that’s a good thing for the Indian team.”
Kohli, who scored 113 off 91 balls, will try to continue his good form in the next two Tests against Bangladesh.
