Following India’s series loss to South Africa in January, Virat Kohli resigned as Test captain, and Rohit Sharma was named the team’s permanent captain in February of this year. In December of last year, Rohit became leader of the white ball team.

Rohit had of course previously demonstrated his prowess as a white-ball skipper in the IPL, leading Mumbai Indians to a record five championships. It was anticipated that Rohit will continue his trophy-winning ways while playing for India.

Some anticipated practically quick results and the end of India’s protracted drought without an ICC trophy. When MS Dhoni led India to the ICC Champions Trophy championship in 2013, defeating England by 5 runs at Edgbaston in the final, it was their last time winning an ICC trophy.

Still Very Early Days For Us To Judge Rohit Sharma As Captain: Mohammad Kaif

At the T20 World Cup in Australia, Rohit captained India for the first time in an ICC competition, leading the side to the semifinals. However, they were unable to advance any further and were defeated by England by a humiliating margin of 10 wickets, who ultimately won the match. This was not a successful run by the lofty criteria that the Indian squad and management set for themselves.

India’s performance in the Asia Cup was poor as well, prior to the ICC T20 World Cup. In the Super 4, they only managed to overcome Afghanistan once and lost to Pakistan and Sri Lanka twice before being eliminated.

Mohammed Kaif, a former cricketer for India, believes it is too soon to evaluate Rohit and his leadership. Additionally, Rohit, who has more than 16000 international runs, should be given a long rope as captain, according to Kaif.

“Rohit is a good captain. It’s still very early days for us to judge him as a captain. We have to wait and watch him in the upcoming tournaments. Pressure is definitely on him because when he became captain, he was expected to win an ICC trophy, which he has failed to do,” during a media encounter, Kaif responded to a query from TimesofIndia.com.

Rohit Sharma Has Done Well Apart From Multi-nation Tournaments: Mohammad Kaif

All eyes will once again be on Rohit and the style of captaincy he brings to the table with India set to host the ICC World Cup (50 over) the following year. The men in blue were victorious when the ODI World Cup was last held in India (2011).

“Rohit has done a wonderful job as captain, apart from the multi-nation tournaments. He failed in the Asia Cup and World Cups. People aren’t happy with him. That’s because Virat (as India captain) was also along the same lines.

Virat won all the bilateral series, and home Test matches but couldn’t take India over the line in the ICC events. We haven’t won an ICC trophy yet under these two captains. People are not happy with Rohit because he hasn’t done well as captain in multi-nation tournaments,” Kaif, who participated in 125 ODIs and 13 Test matches for India, added.

Rohit Sharma Should Be Given Time: Mohammad Kaif

Because of his own performance with the bat at the T20 World Cup, Rohit had to deal with some very scathing criticism. In six games, he could only muster 116 runs at an average of 19.33.

Since starting to captain India in 71 games (including ODIs, Tests, and T20Is) in 2017, Rohit has amassed 2409 runs at an average of 38.23, with 4 hundreds and 15 fifties.

“He (Rohit) is a talented batter as well as a captain. Overall, his record is great. In the World Cup, apart from the England game, India did well against all teams under his captaincy. There will always be ups and downs. South Africa lost to the Netherlands, England lost to Ireland. India played superbly in the World Cup. Rohit should be given time,” Kaif signed off.
