India were bowled out for 404 in the first test of the two-match series against Bangladesh at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram. The Men in Blue were in trouble at 112/4, before Shreyas Iyer and Cheteshwar Pujara forged a 149-run fifth-wicket partnership to post a good total. Both batsmen were dismissed for half-centuries, but neither reached their respective centuries.

Shreyas Iyer missed his second century by 14 runs and was dismissed for 86 as Bangladesh pacer Ebadot Hossain bowled him with a brilliant delivery as the ball straightened just enough to beat him. Iyer had become the 16th Indian cricketer to notch up a 100 on his Test debut in November last year.

Ticked All The Boxes Before The Game – Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer was called up for his maiden Test call-up just before last year’s T20 World Cup. The right-handed batter discussed his test debut and recalled some advice from India teammate Shubman Gill.

“I was prepared in my mind that whatever will happen, I am going to take it heads up, I’ll be in my high spirits. I’ll take it like a boss. So I did my preparations well and ticked all the boxes before the game. Shubman Gill told me ‘agar tune kal 100 maar diya, toh aisa aisa hoga…(If you score a 100 tomorrow, different things will happen with you’ and all that,” Shreyas Iyer said.

“I don’t remember what we were talking about. And next day when I started, I had a feeling like it’s written. Then next day, I completed it in 2 overs by hitting four boundaries,” he added.

Shreyas Iyer scored 105 off 171 balls against New Zealand in Kanpur last year. He added a crucial partnership of 121 runs with Ravindra Jadeja when India was in trouble after losing five wickets for 145 runs.
