The cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra has shared his views on young batter Shubman Gill opening the innings with Rohit Sharma in the one-off Test match against the England National Cricket Team.
The 5th and last Test match of the series between India and England, which was cancelled last year, will be played at the Edgbaston, Birmingham from Friday, July 1.
Star opener KL Rahul had suffered a groin injury ahead of the five-match T20I series against South Africa and was ruled out of the entire series. Also, the opening batsman is set to miss the rescheduled Test against England and young opener Gill will most likely open the innings with the Indian captain.
In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Chopra talked about Gill opening the innings in the Test match against England and said that he is “not necessarily happy about it”. He also said that there will be added pressure on Gill as he will be judged by his performance in a single Test match. He elaborated:
“India do not have many options and will have to go with Shubman Gill. But I am not necessarily happy about it. This is because Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul did a fine job at the top last year in England. They gave good starts and the team did well because of that. Starting well is important in England, as if you lose two early wickets, it becomes difficult to get back on track.”
He has all the ingredients, from height to wrist position and swing – Aakash Chopra on Prasidh Krishna
Former India opening batsman Chopra, speaking in the same video, said that the right-arm pacer Prasidh Krishna has all the ingredients to become a successful red-ball bowler for India. He stated:
“He has all the ingredients, from height to wrist position and swing. I feel that he is going to be handed big roles very soon. We are fortunate that India have good fast bowling reserves in both Tests as well as white-ball cricket. Looking at Prasidh’s bowling and the way he gets batters out, it comes across that he’s more suited to the longer format.”
Meanwhile, both India and England will have new captains in the rescheduled Test match as Virat Kohli and Joe Root have been replaced by Rohit Sharma and Ben Stokes. Also, India have a 2-1 lead in the Test series.
