Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar highlighted the importance of playing a warm-up match before playing a series in the countries like England, Australia, South Africa and the West Indies and said that he is expecting India to do well as they have already played a warm-up match.
India National Cricket Team played a 4-day warm-up match against Leicestershire at the Grace Road, Leicester ahead of the rescheduled Test against England.
Meanwhile, former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar said that India are aware of the fact that only one game is remaining in the Test series and the victory in the match would help them seal their first Test series win in England since 2007.
“In the last tour, India did not play any warm-up matches before they played that first Test. If you tour countries like England, Australia, South Africa, West Indies you have to play some games before you play the Tests to get acclimatised,” Vengsarkar told a select group of reporters.
“That is why we lost that first game. But now they have played a warm-up match and so I expect them to do well. They also know that there is only one match left now. If they win that, they win the series straightaway,” he said.
Test matches are a five-day affair and the T20s are different completely – Dilip Vengsarkar
England National Cricket Team have adopted an aggressive batting approach under skipper Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum. The new approach has helped them register a dominant win over New Zealand in the recently concluded 3-match Test series.
Meanwhile, Vengsarkar feels that Test cricket is completely different from T20 cricket and the aggressive batting approach will not always help a team to win games.
“Test matches are a five-day affair and the T20s are different completely. You can’t do the same kind of batting in both unless you have to win the match in the end, which England did in the last Test match. But that is very rare, every session in a Test match is important. You have to plan things in Test cricket, skills matter a lot. Mental toughness also matters,” he said.
The 5th and last Test match of the series between India and England, which was cancelled last year, will be played at the Edgbaston, Birmingham from Friday, July 1. Also, India have a 2-1 lead in the Test series.
