Former England spinner Ashley Giles, while reacting to England’s ODI series loss against India, said that the ODI line-up of the England National Cricket Team is a bit disjointed and the players haven’t played a lot of cricket together in recent times.
Jos Buttler’s first assignment as full-time captain of England’s white-ball team was a poor one. Under his leadership, England lost the T20I series by 2-1 and the ODI series by 2-1 against Rohit Sharma-led India.

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Ashely Giles pinpointed that England have not fielded their best XI on many occasions in recent times. He said that England’s top-order batters need to make significant contributions and the batters need to maintain an attacking approach that has helped England in past. He said:
“England’s ODI lineup has been a bit disjointed in terms of how much they’ve played together. England haven’t played their best team on that many occasions in ODI cricket recently.
“It takes time to settle in again and play in a different format. They need to get runs in the top order and maintain an attacking approach.”
Until today, we haven’t seen the middle-order step up to that challenge – Ashley Giles on India’s performance in the 3rd ODI
India’s top-order batters – Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli – haven’t been in very good form lately. In the third ODI India’s top-order failed once again. However, Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya’s heroics helped India win the Manchester ODI to win the series.
Meanwhile, Ashley Giles highlighted that some of the Indian batters have been out-of-form lately. He said that the middle-order batters Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya saved the third ODI for India, but India’s middle-order still lacks consistency. He said:
“I don’t think some of the Indian batters are in very good form right now. But that doesn’t mean that they’ll never return to form. But when they do fail, it clearly puts pressure on the middle-order.
“Until today, we haven’t seen the middle-order step up to that challenge. You would want to have a long batting order in white-ball cricket as the No.7 or 8 can score very valuable runs.”
