Wasim Jaffer believes that if Joe Root plays Test cricket at this level for the next five to six years, he may surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time milestone for most runs scored in a Test match.
England beat India in the rescheduled fifth Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham, leaving them trailing the five-match series 1-2.
As England chased down a historic total of 378, Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow scored hundreds to help tie the series at 2-2.
Root carried on from where he left off when the last Test was postponed last year, while Bairstow has been in excellent form lately, scoring hundreds in both innings. The former England captain concluded the series as the highest run-getter with 737 runs and a total of four centuries and one fifty.
Having scored 10,458 runs in 121 Tests, the 31-year-old is presently ranked 12th all-time in Test ranking.
In the last three-match series against New Zealand, Root became the latest member of the 10,000-run club. In that game, he hit two hundred, and at Edgbaston, he follows it up with a triple-digit batting average.
While Tendulkar scored 15,921 Test runs throughout his remarkable 24-year career.
‘He is capable of breaking the record’: Wasim Jaffer
Wasim Jaffer, a former Indian batsman, believes that if Root plays Test cricket at this pace for the next four to five years, he may surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s milestone for most runs scored in a Test match.
“If he plays that long, he can pull it off. Only 31 years old, he. We are all aware of how brief English and Australian players’ careers are. But I think he can shatter the record if he plays for another 5 to 6 years “During a conversation on ESPNcricinfo, Wasim Jaffer stated.
The three-match T20I series between England and India will now begin on Thursday at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton.
