Rashid Latif, a former Pakistan captain, discusses which among Dinesh Karthik and Sanju Samson will make the XI as the wicketkeeper-batter Against Ireland.
The focus has switched from the struggle for the opening spot in the T20I format to the wicketkeeper’s post for the 2022 T20 World Cup team, with India having up to five choices.
Three of them were declared to the South Africa series team, and then another three were appointed to the Ireland tour. India named Ishan Kishan, Rishabh Pant, and Dinesh Karthik for the Proteas’ five-match home series. While Pant was the primary wicketkeeper choice, both Ishan and Karthik ended up finding themselves in the XI during the match, with the remainder good performance as batters.
Pant has been sidelined for the Ireland tour and will return to the India team for the England tour. The selectors had already replaced him with Sanju Samson, while Ishan and Karthik remain in contention.
Whereas Ishan is expected to return as an opening batsman, former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif mentions who among Karthik and Samson will be the wicketkeeper-batter.
‘Karthik will be my first choice for the XI‘: Rashid Latif
Rashid Latif praised Karthik for his impressive stats down the pecking order, which he believes is surprising in the T20s among wicketkeepers. As a result, he supported the 36-year-old for the part.
“Wicketkeepers are doing extremely well enough in world cricket right now.” Samson has been fantastic, but he is a top-order batter. However, among the lower middle order possibilities is Dinesh Karthik.”
“His statistics are ideal for inclusion in the starting XI. It is unusual. And he demonstrated it during his RCB matches, hitting the ball with the highest strike rate down the pecking order. There are not many T20 wicketkeepers who could do that. “Karthik will be my first choice for the XI,” Rashid Latif said.
On Sunday, June 19, India and South Africa will square off in the fifth and final T20I in Bengaluru.
