Former India National Cricket Team pacer Ajit Agarkar lavished praise on the young opening batsman Shubman Gill, saying that the 23-year-old has been the most impressive Indian batter in the ongoing three-match ODI series against New Zealand National Cricket Team.
In 2022, Gill has performed exceptionally well with the bat in ODI cricket as he smashed 625 runs in 11 innings at an average of 78.12 and a strike rate of 104.16. In the first ODI against New Zealand, he scored good 50 runs and in the second ODI, he scored unbeaten 45 runs before the game was washed out due to rain.

During a discussion on Prime Video, Agarkar said that Gill was not overshadowed while batting with in-form Suryakumar Yadav. He said:
“He has not been overshadowed, tells you how good he has been in these one-and-a-half ODI games. He has looked extremely impressive. In my opinion, the most impressive batter that’s been in this Indian team in these couple of ODIs. It’s just how he now knows exactly what his strengths are.
“He is okay to take some time, earlier in your career, when you are younger, maybe you try to push a little bit too hard but that’s not the case anymore.”
Shubman Gill is one of the shining lights – Ashish Nehra
Former India National Cricket Team left-arm pacer Ashish Nehra, who is the head coach of Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), lauded Gill and said that he always plays according to the situation and condition. He elaborated:
“Shubman Gill is one guy, let’s hope, you will be seeing big hundreds in 50-over cricket and especially in Test cricket. He is someone who plays the situation, who plays the conditions and that’s what he has been doing great here as well.
“Before the rain, there was a different mindset. After the rain, with Suryakumar Yadav, he had a different mindset because he has all these gears. He is one of the shining lights, many names come to my mind – there is Prithvi Shaw, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shubman Gill – but he is right up there, there is no doubt about it.”
