Less than a week after India’s T20 World Cup exit, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday, November 18, scrapped the entire senior men’s selection committee and invited applications for new selectors. Led by former pacer Chetan Sharma, Sunil Joshi (South Zone), Harvinder Singh (Central Zone), and Debashish Mohanty (East Zone) are the other members.
The Indian squad performed quite well in bilateral series during the tenure of the Sharma-led committee, winning the most of them. Last year, the Men in Blue failed to make the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup in the UAE, and they also failed to make the final of the Asia Cup 2022, which was hosted at the same venue.
Virat Kohli’s Sacking Involved A Lot Of Lies – Danish Kaneria
Danish Kaneria stated on his YouTube channel that the Indian selection committee attempted to destroy Virat Kohli’s career during their tenure. The former Pakistan cricketer believes the selection committee did not treat the star batter properly during his form slump, failing to offer him consistent opportunities.
“The selection committee tried to ruin Virat Kohli’s career. They didn’t select him consistently when he was struggling with form, making him play selective cricket. He was unceremoniously removed as the captain,” Danish Kaneria said.
“Kohli’s sacking involved a lot of lies. The player himself clarified that he had no discussions with anyone regarding his removal. However, he didn’t let this affect his game,” he added.
Chetan Sharma’s Stint Was A Very Poor One – Danish Kaneria
Kaneria went on to say that Sharma failed in his job of identifying the right combination and that some players couldn’t get a consistent run with the national squad. The 41-year-old advised the board to find a strong candidate for the important job in the future.
“Former cricketers should surely be part of the setup. But players who have some weight should be given preference. Chetan Sharma’s stint was a very poor one. The selections were questionable, and he appointed so many different captains in such a short span of time. The players who deserved to be in the team didn’t get enough opportunities.”
