Star opener KL Rahul is hoping that he and his opening partner Mayank Agarwal can provide India with a great start in the upcoming three-match Test series against South Africa which will begin from December 26.

Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul were the two first-choice openers for India in the South Africa tour. However, the Test vice-captain Rohit Sharma suffered a hamstring injury and was ruled out of the Test series. Also, Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the series due to an injury and the two openers remaining are Rahul and Mayank who will most likely open the innings for India in the Test series.

Hopefully me and you (Mayank) can go out there on the 26th of December and get our team off to a great start and have a great series “

Rahul added that he never thought that he and Mayank will one day open the innings for India in international cricket. He said:

For both of us it’s been a wonderful journey. We never dreamt or thought that we will play for the country together. I debuted in a Boxing Day game in Australia (last year) which didn’t go great. I lost my position in a Boxing Day game to you, which I was very happy for you (Mayank).”

The 29-year-old Rahul was appointed as India’s Test vice-captain after Rohit Sharma got ruled out. Meanwhile, he has said that he never thought of making a comeback in Test cricket and he is grateful to become the deputy of Virat Kohli in the South Africa Test series. He stated:

“Before 6-7 months or a year ago, I never thought of playing another Test for India. Things changed quickly and I am very happy and grateful for such a huge responsibility that is given to me as vice-captain for this tour. I am looking forward to giving my best.

KL Rahul further added that he has some “bittersweet memories” with the Boxing Day Test matches. He explained:

“I have bitter-sweet memories from Boxing Day. I debuted in a Boxing Day Test in Australia, but that did not go well. I lost my position again. I felt that was the end for me. I think I have become more balanced in my approach towards the game. I have changed a lot from how I used to play in 2014 when I made my debut and in 2018.”
