Former South Africa bowler Dale Steyn said the Indian team missed the all-round brilliance of Ravindra Jadeja in their recent tour of South Africa.
India started the South Africa tour with the hope to win their first-ever Test series in the Rainbow Nation. In fact, they breached Proteas’ fortress in Centurion (SuperSport Park) with a 113-run win.
But the Proteas led by Dean Elgar bounced back to win the three-match Test series 2-1 and keep their winning streak against India at home intact.
South Africa whitewashed India 3-0 in the ODI series to show that the new set of players are determined to win against any strong side in international cricket.
Ravindra Jadeja is a wonderful cricketer: Dale Steyn
Indian spinners Ravichandran Ashwin (two ODI matches) and Yuzvendra Chahal picked only three wickets between them in the series against the Proteas.
Steyn said that had Jadeja been there with the Indian team, the all-rounder could have controlled the game with his bowling in the middle overs.
“They (India) definitely missed somebody like Sir Ravi Jadeja. I just think he is a wonderful cricketer. He can control the game with his left-arm spin. He is brilliant and he can also bat,” said Steyn on Star Sports.
India need somebody to back up Jasprit Bumrah: Dale Steyn
Steyn suggested that India should started looking at bowlers who can produce genuine pace bowling and can support Bumrah in their bowling attack.
“India’s got a bit of a bowling issue. They need somebody to back up Bumrah. They need someone who can bowl in a 140-145km per hour bracket. Shami is great. He had a long Test series. Siraj looks like a name for the future. I think he’s got a bit of a niggle,” Steyn mentioned.
South Africa opener Quinton de Kock, who amassed 229 runs to end up as the highest run-scorer of the ODI series, was adjudged as the player of the series.
