India head coach Rahul Dravid feels that selecting the playing XI is a tough job as the Indian team have got “real quality” and leaving out players is never an easy decision.
Virat Kohli-led India will lock horns with South Africa in the three-match Test series which will begin from December 26 at the SuperSport Park, Centurion and Dravid and Kohli will have to make some tough decisions while selecting the playing XI.
The Test series will be followed by the three-match One Day International series which will begin from January 19, 2022. The Indian team have never won a series in South Africa however looking at their recent performance in the Australia and England tour the expectations from India to win are at an all-time high.
Meanwhile, Dravid in a virtual press conference on the eve of the first Test said:
“It’s never easy to leave out players, we have got some real quality. Sometimes we are not scared to make those calls, we have been having some really good conversations regarding the selection. Most players are professional and sometimes you have to have difficult conversations with a player.”
Everyone Wants To Be A Part Of The Playing XI But They Understand The Situations – Rahul Dravid
Dravid believes that the players who fail to make it to the final XI will be disappointed but it will eventually help them succeed at this level. He explained:
“Everyone wants to be a part of the playing XI but they understand the situations. As long as you can communicate and give them the reasons about it then it’s okay, Players will be disappointed, but that is one of the things that makes people succeed at this level, you want to be playing, competing and part of the action, not sitting out.”
Rahul Dravid further added that starting well in South Africa is very important as it puts pressure on the opposition. He said:
“Starting well is very important, it’s not the be all and end all but it’s important to start well. It’s not a make or a break but it’s always nice to come on tour and start well, it puts pressure on the home team. If you put the opposition under pressure then it would set up the series for us.”
