Rassie van der Dussen and Temba Baumva added a 204-run stand or the fourth wicket to help South Africa post 296/4 in the first ODI in Paarl. This happened after the Proteas won the toss and elected to bat first. India drew early blood by dismissing Janneman Malan (6) but the Dussen-Bavuma partnership meant that they finished strong.

Temba Bavuma scored 110 while Rassie van der Dussen scored an unbeaten 129 and played the Indian bowlers with great ease. They did not let the Indian spinners settle as both Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal went for 53 off their 10 overs each.

The previous 200-run partnership for South Africa against India came way back in 2000 in Kochi between Herschelle Gibbs and Gary Kirsten. The partnership between Bavuma and Dussen was also the second-highest fourth-wicket partnership against India. The highest remains 206 between Shoaib Malik and Mohammed Yousuf In 2009.

“Temba and myself first thought is to get a bit of a partnership going. Knew if we let their spinners settle it’s going to be a long and tricky day. He played an anchoring innings allowing me to express myself. For me in the middle order It’s about upping the intensity when you come in.

“Chahal there, if you let him settle, it was turning for him, it was conditions he’ll fancy himself in. Had to get the reverse-sweep and sweeps out early and not allow him to let him settle. Learnings I have taken in the last year or two is if you have your plans and you’ve done the preparation, need to back yourself to execute whether it’s the first ball or the 100th ball,” said van der Dussen on his stand with Bavuma.

India in quest of 297 to win lost KL Rahul (12) early in the innings. However, Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan have added over 50-runs between themselves and are keeping India in the contest with their partnership.
