South Africa official Marais Erasmus on Monday was named as the ICC Umpire of the Year 2021. Erasmus was part of the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 final between Australia and New Zealand on November 14 last year.

Erasmus bagged his third award of the David Shepherd Trophy (ICC Umpire of the Year) after winning it back to back in 2016 & 2017.

Marais Erasmus stood in 20 matches in 2021

Erasmus stood in 20 international matches across all formats in the year 2021. He is only the third official from his country to stand in 100 ODI matches after Rudi Koertzen and David Orchard.

Erasmus was part of the recently concluded India’s tour of South Africa 2021-22, he stood in all six matches (three Tests and three ODIs).

He was the one who adjudged South Africa Test skipper Dean Elgar out for a leg-before wicket appeal from Ravichandran Ashwin in the final innings of the Cape Town Test.

After having a chat with Keegan Petersen, Elgar decided to refer the decision to the TV umpire and it ruled in his favour as the DRS replay showed the ball had bounced over the stumps.

Erasmus was completely stunned by the DRS and as he was asked to change his decision, the 57-year-old was spotted saying ‘that is impossible’ not once but twice.

The Indian team was left livid with the DRS call as they firmly believed that Elgar was trapped before the wicket. Just after the decision, senior Indian players like skipper Virat Kohli and Ashwin vented frustration while speaking to the stumps.

Their comments were caught on the stump mic and it clearly indicated that the players were accusing the official broadcasters of robbing them of the important wicket of Dean Elgar.

Erasmus stood in his first international match, a T20I fixture between South Africa and Australia, at the New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on February 24, 2006.
