IND vs SA: I Really Can't Digest This Fact- Aakash Chopra Refuses To Believe Venkatesh Iyer Is Unfit
Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra reckoned that it doesn’t make any sense for Venkatesh Iyer to be dropped from the third and final ODI against South Africa, especially on the basis of a fitness-related issue.
Indian captain KL Rahul confirmed that the team made four changes to the team, with Suryakumar Yadav, Jayant Yadav, Deepak Chahar, and Prasidh Krishna coming in for Ravichandran Ashwin, Shardul Thakur, Venkatesh Iyer, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
While the other three make sense especially considering the workload and performance, dropping Iyer is quite a surprising decision. He is being looked at as a future candidate to fill Hardik Pandya’s role. However, he hasn’t gotten a good opportunity to fully showcase his talent.
“That doesn’t make sense at all” – Aakash Chopra
Stating that the decision to drop Iyer is something that cannot be fathomed, Chopra asserted that the 27-year-old only bowled four overs across two matches and was asked to bat well down the order where he couldn’t make much of an impact.
“One thing that has really surprised me is that Venkatesh Iyer cannot be unfit. I really can’t digest this fact. Because that doesn’t make sense at all. You played him only twice, handed him the ball only once and then you drop him in the next match. You are once again going with only five bowlers. I’m not 100 per cent with the fact…Iyer has been dropped,” Chopra said on Star Sports.
Since Hardik has fallen out of favour due to his injuries resurfacing time and again, Iyer is being groomed as an all-rounder who can also function as a finisher.
