Former India National Cricket Team player Sanjay Manjrekar believes that Team India are unlikely to play Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav together in the playing XI at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, which will be held in Australia.

Star leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who was surprisingly dropped from India’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 squad, is India’s first-choice spinner in white-ball cricket. However, Team India have failed to find a perfect spin-bowling partner for Chahal since the Kul-Cha, the duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Chahal, faded away from international cricket.

Recently, Kuldeep made his comeback to India and bagged a 3-wicket haul in the 5th T20I match against West Indies. Also, spinners Ravi Bishnoi and Axar Patel have performed exceptionally well for India against West Indies.

On Monday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2022, and three specialist spinners including, Chahal, Bishnoi and Ravichandran Ashwin were picked along with spin-bowling all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja in the main squad and spin-bowling all-rounder Axar Patel was named as a stand-by player.

The 57-year-old during an interaction on the Sports 18 show ‘Sports Over the Top’, was asked whether Team India had gotten any closer to figuring out who would be the spin-bowling partner of Chahal. He elaborated:

“That is the problem when you try all recipes and all recipes are brilliant, so which is the one that you pick, so it is tough. Ashwin had a good time when he was given the opportunities. Kuldeep Yadav has given them more problems with his performance.

“What a comeback by this guy (Kuldeep), so he comes in. I still maintain that in the playing XI India might not play a combination of Kuldeep Yadav and Chahal in a T20 World Cup. They would want a spinner with some control and that’s where Axar Patel and Ashwin come in.”

He further said that Axar and Chahal would be India’s top 2 spin-bowling options for the World Cup. He said:

“Chahal is your No. 1 spinner on the food chain, so I would think a wrist-spinner. Mostly Axar Patel and Chahal could be your first two spinners in the playing XI with a couple of backup spinners.”
