The news that Team India’s captain Rohit Sharma will be available for the final two games of the India-West Indies T20I series on Saturday and Sunday in Lauderhill, Florida, will come as a huge relief.

On Tuesday, Sharma had to leave the field injured while batting on ll off 5 balls in the third T20I in Warner Park, Basseterre, St Kitts, due to a back spasm.

“Yes, Rohit has recovered from his back spasms and is fit now. He and coach Rahul Dravid will join the team in Miami after they had to go to Guyana with a few other players for interviews for the US Visa,” a source in the BCCI told TOI. After moving closer to quick bowler Alzarri Joseph in the second over and dragging a four to the fine-leg boundary via a bottom edge, Rohit felt some pain.

He left the field clutching his back after speaking briefly with the physio Kamlesh Jain on the pitch.

The loss of all-rounder Harshal Patel, who missed the second and third T20Is at Basseterre due to a rib ailment, further diminished India’s strength. In addition, the visitors benched Ravindra Jadeja on Tuesday since he was still recovering from a knee injury and gave Deepak Hooda a start.

For the ODI portion of the West Indies trip, Rohit had also been rested. Prior to it, he had been unable to play in the fifth Test against England that had been postponed and was played at Edgbaston in July due to a positive Covid-19 test from the four-day warm-up match against Leicestershire.
